Jason Tien, a doctoral candidate in neuroscience at UCSF, and Alberto Ortega Hinojosa, a doctoral candidate in public health at UC Berkeley, were honored for helping develop a student health insurance plan that is both comprehensive and affordable. 

Eric Vermillion, associate vice chancellor of finance, has been promoted to vice chancellor of finance, in recognition of his increased scope of responsibilities during the last three years and 32-year commitment to UCSF.

Targeting a protein that leukemia cells use to stay alive may be the key to fighting drug-resistant leukemia, a discovery that may make cancer drugs more powerful and help doctors formulate drug cocktails to cure more children of leukemia, a team led by UCSF researchers reports.

UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann today (May 17) issued a letter to the UCSF community in response to Gov. Brown's revised budget.

UCSF's inter-school research day is "part of the growing recognition of the importance of interprofessional team learning and research which is key to the translational medicine of the future,” according to Joel Palefsky, who is credited with organizing the event showcasing research from fellows, residents and students from all four professional schools. 

UCSF has produced a series of public service announcements to address mental health issues and other health-related issues in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami on March 11 and continuing crises at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan.

UCSF leaders gathered May 11 to acknowledge the impact the earthquake, tsunami and ongoing nuclear crisis has had on people in Japan and to show support of visiting Japanese students and scholars.
