Dress Rehearsal
Before students face real patients, they face trained actors. Watch how UCSF’s standardized patients help prepare the next generation of clinicians.
Before the curtain rises on another round of student exams, a handful of trained performers huddle over their scripts — fine-tuning symptoms, backstories, and the occasional curveball question designed to test a student’s bedside manner. These standardized patients — part actor, part educator — help students at UCSF’s Kanbar Center for Simulation and Clinical Skills practice the delicate art of listening, assessing, and delivering hard news with empathy.
