<p>As one of the preeminent biomedical education and health sciences research institutions in the world, UCSF emerged early as a pioneer in the fight against AIDS. Today, three decades later, UCSF is working on multiple fronts to prevent, treat and stop the spread of the disease that has killed 33 million people worldwide.</p>
<p>The first conference of its kind in Uganda drew together investigators from across all of sub-Saharan Africa to discuss leading-edge problems in the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of fostering meaningful collaborations to combat the disease.</p>
<p>Vice Chancellor Joseph Castro will be awarded the International Cooperation Dedication Award, which is presented by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education to an educator whose influence, dedication and work impacts higher education collaboration on the world stage. </p>
<p>In a bold demonstration of support for the many children with cancer they have treated over the years, several UCSF doctors and other staff members will have their heads shaved bald in a special event on June 8 to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research.</p>
The nation’s system of freeing some terminally ill prisoners on grounds of compassionate release is so riddled with medical flaws and procedural barriers that many potentially medically eligible inmates are dying behind bars, say UCSF researchers in a new study.
